Children and the Life of the Meeting (CALM)

Welcome

E-mail Print PDF

Children are an important part of our worship community, contributing to the life of our Meeting in many ways! We invite families and children to join us in First Day School and at other special gatherings throughout the year (e.g. Halloween party, gingerbread house making, Christmas potluck, spaghetti dinners, folk dancing & singing nights).

First Day School

First Day School takes place every Sunday to coincide with 10:30am Meeting for Worship. Children go to their classrooms at 10:15am so that adults in their family have a few minutes to settle into 10:30 worship. Children in First Day School classrooms rejoin their families in worship at 11:15am. Our First Day School program includes five classrooms of children from infants through high school age:
•    Nursery
•    Kindergarten – 2nd Grade
•    3rd – 5th Grade
•    Junior Young Friends (currently combined with Senior Young Friends under one group)
•    Senior Young Friends

Joining Worship
Children join the Meeting for Worship in the last 15 minutes. First Day School teachers help prepare children for sitting in worship. Also, parents can find it helpful to talk ahead of time with children about why we sit in silence and to give them ideas about how they can sit in silence. Older children can be taught centering techniques, and younger ones can be taught how to be silent and how to whisper quietly when they want to communicate. With toddlers, it might be helpful to have with you a favorite quiet toy or book you can give them to occupy themselves. Practicing silence at home, for example before meals, might also prepare them.
If you are feeling at a loss about how to manage your children's restlessness in meeting, seek out a member of CALM or a First Day School teacher for support. Our meeting has a wealth of people with experience creatively responding to active children.

After Meeting For Worship

After Meeting for Worship
Children are invited to remain in Meeting during the sharing of joys and sorrows, introductions and announcements, and for refreshments at rise of Meeting. We ask you to be aware of your children’s location and activities during this time.
Child Care during other Meeting Activities

On the third Sunday of each month at 12:15pm (after refreshments) a Meeting for Business is held. During this meeting decisions are made on matters of corporate concern and responsibility. All are welcome to attend. Child care is provided during Meeting for Business so that parents can participate in the decisions of the Meeting.
Child care is also provided for the meeting’s bi-annual School of the Spirit and for Spiritual Journey Presentations (first Sunday, September to June).
Every fourth Sunday (September to May) there is a potluck lunch for all who attend Meeting. There is no organized child care during this time, so parents will need to keep track of their children during potluck.
Children and the Life of the Meeting (CALM) Committee
The meeting’s CALM committee meets the third Monday of the month from 6:45–9pm at the meeting house. We spend this time planning First Day School and other family friendly activities for our meeting community. We consider other matters as pertain to children and our meeting such as policies and procedures, the welcoming of new children, and the resources available to volunteer teachers for classrooms.
Thank you to the San Francisco Monthly Friends Meeting for permission to borrow some of their ideas.
