COLORADO QUAKER WOMEN’S RETREAT

Immigration:  Just Like Us

 (Registration due date is Thursday, February 11, 2010)

March 12 – 14, 2010        Highlands Presbyterian Camp, Allenspark, CO

Theme for the weekend:  The topic of immigration has sparked a lot of discussion and emotion over the years.  We will explore our own experiences and emotions, and learn from Helen Thorpe, (author of the recently published Just Like Us: The True Story of Four Mexican Girls Coming of Age in America) and Danielle Short, formerly with the AFSC Immigration Project.

Queries:

What was my family’s experience with immigration? What are the stories I hold about my own and others’ arrivals in the United States? How do I respond to differences in other people’s cultures, languages, and appearance? How do fear and stereotypes affect my response to an immigrant? How has an immigrant touched my life? How do I find commonality with all people? What can I do to support immigrants and/or immigration reform? How do the Quaker testimonies allow me to shape and deepen my understanding of immigration?

Plans: The retreat begins on Friday night in the Chapel with an informal potluck. The retreat includes worship sharing both mornings and the main presenters on Saturday.   We will hold Meeting for Worship on Sunday and a short planning meeting for the next retreat.  Further details and an agenda will be sent to participants.  As always, the retreat is yours to use as will best nurture you at this time.

Accommodations:  There are 2 options for lodging.

1.   We have the Black Bear cabin (and, depending on number registering, the Antelope Cabin) with dorm-style bunk beds, shared bathrooms, and small front lounges;

2.   We have two large retreat center rooms (hotel-style suites) that will sleep a total of ten people. The beds at the Retreat Center will be assigned first to those with limited mobility.  After that, they will go to those who register for 2-night stays on a first-come, first-served basis.

Meals: Beginning with breakfast on Saturday and ending with lunch on Sunday, meals are provided in the cafeteria. The camp now cooks for most dietary needs, as well as for omnivores.  Make sure we know your dietary requirements, since the camp will do its best to meet your needs.  Due to a group food poisoning some years ago, the camp no longer allows people to bring any food to the property that requires either refrigeration or heating prior to eating.

Registrations must be postmarked no later than February 9, 2010 or delivered by Thursday, February 11.  When we receive your registration, we’ll send you a confirmation letter with directions and advice on what to bring.
