Library committee members for the 2008-2009 year are Ellen Brill, Jane Cahn, Jay Devaughn, Gail Hoffman, and Carol Tagstrom.
Through-out the year we have returned to confirm our understanding that our library is vitally important to the community. The library’s unique role is to provide written materials directed at new attenders and members engaged in learning more about the Religious Society of Friends. We believe that books are one vehicle used to deepen our personal journeys.
Routine tasks involved in our work include sustaining subscriptions to “Pendle Hill Pamphlets” and “Friends Bulletin.”
We continue to track items in circulation to maximize retention of books in our collection.
• Items deemed worthy of being in a research library were sent to Barclay College in Haviland, Kansas. Remarkably, while pursuing a permanent location for these items, we found Bill’s Memorial Minute. Through the minute, we discovered that Bill had actually attended Barclay College during his young adult years.
• Work with William Alsup proceeds on enclosing several of the “cubby” shelves in the library annex to display Bill’s old books.
• Duplicate copies of the Complete Works of George Fox were shared with Colorado Springs.
• ….might benefit from the information it contains, for example, employees or people interested in purchasing a product or in requesting your services.
• Conversion of the collection to the Dewey Decimal System
• Selection and purchase of Readerware Software initiated this process.
• Work day efforts and extra hours contributed by committee members during the week to input the data have resulted in major progress in this effort.
• Summer labelling of spines with Dewey numbers and re-shelving has almost been completed.
• Brochures were purchased and are now positioned by the front door for visitors interested in learning more about Quakerism.
Additional efforts include:
• Creation of a written statement of committee policy and procedures.
• Acquisition of new books through purchase and donation by MVFM members.
• On-going maintenance of Pendle Hill Pamphlet collection.
• The purpose of a newsletter is to provide specialized information to a targeted audience. Newsletters can be Organization of library books on the east wall highlighting Recent Acquisitions, Recommended Quaker Readings, and Current Concerns in a rotating display.
• Revitalization of the Children’s Library in the First Day School space during the summer as part of the refreshing efforts on the second floor.
• Placement of information about Colorado’s Talking Book Library in our library.
As we offer this report, the library committee is pursuing:
• Acquisition of copies of selected large print Quaker books.
• Acquisition of items of an environmental nature via Quaker Earthcare Witness.
We invite your input and suggestions at any time. We also welcome donation of personal Quaker books from your personal collection which might help you simplify your life.
