As a faith community that values integrity in our communications with one another, as well as plain speech, we change the name of our Oversight Committee to Care and Counsel Committee.
As Friends, we are aware that the word "oversight" is derived from "overseer," a term used widely during slave times to refer to the slave owner's position of domination over enslaved Africans. Because of the term’s contamination by the hierarchical domination of one people over another, we no longer find it to be an appropriate name for a committee that facilitates our faith community's loving support and care for one another.
At the same time, we are drawn to a committee name that clearly describes the role of the committee so members and attenders are aware of how this committee can be of help in times of need.
